| Modified Atmosphere Packaging
|Use of different gas mixtures developed for Modified Atmosphere Packaging applications, with the aim to to prolong shelf-life of food-stuffs keeping its sensorial and microbiological properties in the right way. The main activity carried out in the area is to develop new gas mixtures combined with the right packaging material or with other emergent technologies that allow to prolong food shelf-life in the appropriate conditions|| Full equipped Laboratory of food applications: Vacuum chamber, tray and form fill packaging machines with different packaging gases, etc.
|Bioenergy||One of our research platforms is the conversion of residual biomass (e.g. waste from food industry, paper, water treatment or synthesis of biofuels with a major content of biomass) into energy through thermochemical processes by using oxygen, processing with CO2 or pretreatments complementary to fermentation, among others.|| In the MATGAS facilities, there is the Supercritical Fluids laboratory focused on the research and development of new applications of supercritical fluids or fluids at high pressures and temperatures. This includes extraction and concentration of natural products, polymer impregnation, CO2 transportation and sequestration and synthesis of new materials and catalysts. The laboratory is equipped with several high pressure reactors with different configurations and sizes, from 10 ml to 16 l; it also includes a pilot plant, Phase Analyzer, Soxhtherm, etc. We also have a research boiler for different trials related to biomass conversion to energy.
|Cryogenic freezing||Freezing of different food products such as burgers, poultry products, fish, ice creams, bakery products, etc. The main activity carried out in the area is to improve liquid nitrogen cryogenic freezing systems.|| Tunnel freezers, badge freezers
|Disinsectisation||Use of CO2 to control pests in food products during its storage and commercialization by means of Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) with a high CO2 content. We are carrying out research related with this subject for more than 12 years, in our full equipped Food Preservation Laboratory. In this framework, different gases mixtures and procedures have been tested to find the correct one that allows to control pests in any stage of their development. In the laboratory, projects of R&D as well as technology support to industry are being carried out, with the aim to improve the application of carbon dioxide for controlling pest in cereals, legumes, nuts, herbs, etc. All this experience allows us to test, in industrial conditions, the use of CO2 for controlling different insect and mite species.|| Full equipped Laboratory of food applications.
|Water treatment||At MATGAS we develop different water and wastewater treatment technologies in order to get the best dissolution efficiency for each kind of water (recreational, industrial cooling water systems, municipal, etc). We are also focused on industrial and municipal wastewater treatment to meet the most stringent wastewater reuse disinfection requirements while also removing trace contaminants such as endocrine disruptors (EDCs) and pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) contaminants.||Green Energy Laboratory full equipped with reactors,injection system for waste water treatment, and auxiliar equipments that support a complete analysis and control of the water parameters.|
